Soongsil University was founded in 1897 by American missionary Dr. William M. Baird, who was working in Korea at the time. Its predecessor was Soongsil Academy. In Korean, “Soong” (숭) from soongsang means respect, and “Sil” (실) from jinsil means truth. Therefore, the university’s educational philosophy is “Truth and Service.”
